Entrance to the Center of the World
A door that expresses the humbling and uncanny feeling that I felt when entering the earth’s crust.
The door is marked with a constellation of signs we do not know. Not a human language, but that of the earth itself. One that acknowledges our limited understanding of the world, and marks the beginning of a realm not ruled by us.
Piercing through the door is the map of the journey to the centre of the earth that awaits, inspired by drawings from a speleologists’ archive.
This piece is made from a single slab of oak that we felled a couple of years ago. The tiles are made from clay gathered from within the caves, and stamped with bones found there too.
This artwork was made during a residency at APUA space dedicated to the subterranean worlds. it was exhibited during the final residency restituition event at Pian della Chiesa, Italy.
