Calice

A representation of how death makes way for new life.

Living systems, like woodlands, move through stages of growth until they reach maturity. Occasionally, a wildfire blazes everything to the ground. Matter decomposes, decays, mixes, and morphs into new life forms. A perpetual cycle of regenerative destruction.

This sculpture is made of charred wood. Along its stem are three warm wombs, each holding small microbial offerings. At the top, a chalice filled with seeds awaits to sprout, bridging the world of the dead with that of the living.

This piece was made during the Cavanei Cavanei residency, drawing on the idea of Cavanei as archaic tombs that have today given life to a dark and humid microclimate for mosses, lichens, and centipedes.
